Project Overview – Supply of a Large Industrial Diesel Generator for Pub Project
Target Power Generators was contacted by an existing M&E contractor, Red Electric Designs Ltd, to help them procure a large open-type generator that could achieve 400 kVA in prime power. The generator was an open type and needed a residential exhaust to help reduce noise levels. The customer also wanted to monitor the generator remotely, so we fitted an 8-relay extension for the client. A 630A automatic transfer switch was also manufactured to UK standards, ensuring quality.

Application: Emergency standby diesel generator for industrial use. The generator was to power the new build pub if the power went off.
Project Details
Our client chose Target Power because we offer customizable diesel generator solutions. This was the second time they used us, having previously procured a super silent diesel generator for a residential application.
The customer was also working within a budget and knew Target Power Generators could deliver a high-quality industrial diesel generator at the right price for them.
They wanted Target Power to supply the generator and provide a FAT (factory acceptance test) and price commissioning for them as well.
Selecting the Right Size Standby Diesel Generator
The generator was being used for standby purposes, so it was critical that we sourced one of the most reliable engines for the project. This is why we opted for the Volvo Penta TAD1344GE engine. The generator had to start within 10 seconds and also reach 50% step load. The Volvo engine was able to achieve this.
We had to produce an 8-hour internal tank to support the Volvo diesel generator for continuous running for 8 hours at 100% load. The tank was fully bunded, and we used high-quality anti-vibration mounts to help reduce noise levels.
Meeting EU Legislation:
We understand that different markets require different generator builds. In the EU, our sets come with a standby kit as standard, which includes automatic mains failure (AMF) and a water jacket heater. Therefore, this open-type generator for The Castle Pub was manufactured to UK and EU specifications, including a 4-pole breaker, earthed neutral link, bunded base, high-grade sound insulation, and more.
Transportation:
The generator needed to be loaded onto a flatbed truck because they were using a crane to offload the generator. We manufactured the base to have lifting eyes, which were capable of lifting the whole generator set.
Project Completion:
Our client allowed us 8 weeks to produce the set. This timeframe provided us with sufficient time to design and manufacture the open-type diesel generator to their specifications. Furthermore, because the client wanted an 8-relay extension, we designed the control box to accommodate it.
